What is Neurotoxin and what are the brand differences?

Botulinum toxin A is a neurotoxin that was revealed more than a century ago. The neurotoxin interferes or blocks nerve signals when injected into a muscle preventing contractions.

There are many uses of botulinum toxin A for medical/ therapeutic purposes including Blepharospasm (involuntary eyelid contractions), Strabismus (crossed eyes), Cervical dystonia (involuntary contraction of neck muscles), Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), Urinary incontinence, and Migraine headaches, just to name a few.

We love Botulinum toxin injections for aesthetic concerns for problem areas like crow’s feet, forehead lines and frown lines. Here is where the differences occur.  Botox is FDA approved for all these indications, however, Dysport and Xeomin are only approved for frown lines. However, each botulinum toxin can be used off-label for the other indications like neck bands, chin dimpling, wrinkles around the corners of the mouth, shape of the jaw line, and gummy smile. The different brands become visible at different intervals from one product to the other, but they tend to last about the same amount of time. All three last three to four months on average, with some saying it lasts up to six months.
